surrender

Surrender comes from Middle English surrendren, from Old French surrendre, formed from sur- plus rendre, "to render." It pushed out the native Old English phrase on hand gān.

The word entered English as a verb built on the idea of rendering something over, and a related Anglo-Norman infinitive form, surrendre, also came to be used as a noun. Either way, it replaced older English expressions for the same act rather than growing out of them.

It shares its root with render, since surrender is essentially that word with sur- ("over") attached to it.
