suspicion

From Middle English suspecioun, borrowed from Latin suspīciō, suspīciōnem, itself from the verb suspicere — a combination of sub- ("up to") and specere ("to look at"). The word may also have been shaped by the Anglo-Norman form suspecioun.

The word is essentially the noun form of suspect, built with the -ion ending; its Latin root already carried the sense of looking upward or askance at something.

It shares its root with suspect, both tracing back to Latin suspicere — a case of one word being the seed of the other.
