temple

Temple comes from Old English templ, tempel, borrowed from Latin templum, meaning a shrine or the marked-out area used for taking auspices. Old High German tempal shows the same Latin word was borrowed elsewhere too.

The Old English borrowing displaced the native word ealh, which had meant the same thing, so templum's descendant became the standard English word for a sacred building.

A separate English word spelled the same way, for the flat part of the head, comes instead from Old French temple and Latin tempora, the plural of tempus meaning 'temple, head, face' — an entirely different root that just happens to look identical.
