English borrowed "tempo" from Italian tempo, which traces back to Latin tempus, meaning "time."

Beyond its musical sense, the word also became a genericized trademark for a brand of truck or cargo van, and it's sometimes used as a clipping of "temporary."

It's a doublet of "tense," meaning both words descend from the same Latin root, tempus, but arrived in English by different paths.
