From Middle English valeye/valey, borrowed through Anglo-Norman valey and Old French valee (compare French vallée), ultimately from Latin vallēs/vallis.

The word came into English through French and largely took over the job that native words dene and dale used to do, displacing dene and partly displacing dale.

It's a doublet of vlei and vly, meaning all three trace back to the same Latin root, just by different paths into English.
