Terrace was borrowed from French terrasse, which came from Old Occitan terrassa, from Vulgar Latin *terrācea, itself built on Latin terra, meaning 'land.'

The word has always stayed close to its root sense — a raised, leveled bank of earth — carried from Vulgar Latin through Occitan and French into English largely intact.

It's a doublet of terrasse, meaning both words ultimately trace back to the same Latin source, terra.
