From Latin mūsēum, meaning 'library' or 'study,' which came from Ancient Greek Μουσεῖον (Mouseîon), a shrine dedicated to the Muses, the goddesses tied to the word Μοῦσα (Moûsa).

The word moved from naming a sacred shrine of the Muses to describing a quieter Latin space for study and books, and eventually settled into English as a place for collections on display.

It's a doublet of 'mosaic' — the two words trace back to the same root, though they've come to describe very different things: one a building, the other a pattern of tiles.
