cot

English "cot" meaning a light bed was borrowed from Hindi खाट (khāṭ), which goes back to Sanskrit खट्वा (khaṭvā), meaning bedstead. A separate "cot" meaning a small dwelling comes instead from Old English cot and cote, rooted in Proto-Germanic *kutą.

The bedstead sense traveled from Sanskrit through Hindi into English essentially unchanged in meaning, still describing a simple frame for sleeping. The cottage sense, from Old English, developed along its own separate path referring to small shelters rather than beds.

The cottage-sense "cot" is a doublet of "cote" (as in dovecote) and is more distantly related to "cottage."
