Cafeteria comes from Mexican Spanish cafetería, meaning "coffeehouse," which was built from cafetera, "coffee maker." That word traces back through French cafetière to café, which ultimately goes back to Ottoman Turkish kahve and Arabic qahwa, "coffee."

The word entered English tied to its Mexican Spanish sense of a coffeehouse, but in English it broadened to describe any self-service dining space, not just one centered on coffee.

It's a doublet of cafetière, the French word for a coffee pot — both descend from the same Arabic root for coffee.
