Where it came from

Hebrew began as a regional dialect of the Canaanite languages, spoken natively by the Israelites. Its earliest written examples, in Paleo-Hebrew, date to the 10th century BCE, and nearly all of the Hebrew Bible is in Biblical Hebrew. It stopped being a regular spoken language between 200 and 400 CE but stayed in use for liturgy and literature, and in the 19th century it was revived as a spoken language, with Eliezer Ben-Yehuda leading the creation of its modern form.
