Turbine was borrowed from French turbine, which came from Latin turbō, turbinem, meaning 'tornado, whirlwind, or crowd.'

The word kept its spinning, whirling core meaning as it moved from Latin's word for a whirlwind, through French, into English, where it settled on the machines that spin to generate power.

It shares its Latin root turbō with the idea of turbulence, that same sense of swirling, disordered motion.
