Spire comes from Middle English spire/spyre, from Old English spīr, from Proto-Germanic *spīrō or *spīrǭ, meaning 'peak, point, tip, or stalk.'

The word once described any tapering point or a slender stalk of a plant, and that same sense of a narrow, rising tip carried over to describe the pointed tops of towers and steeples.

It's cognate with Dutch spier, German Spier/Spiere, Danish spir, Norwegian spir/spire, Swedish spira, and Icelandic spíra — all echoes of that same Germanic root for something slender and pointed.
