recover

Recover comes from Middle English recoveren, by way of Anglo-Norman recoverer and Old French recovrer, from Latin recuperāre — a word also preserved in English as recuperate. Some sources instead trace it as re- joined to cover, itself from Old French covrir and Latin cooperiō.

The word entered Middle English already carrying its core sense of getting something back or being restored, and that meaning has stayed remarkably steady into modern English.

Recover is a doublet of recuperate — the two words descend from the same Latin root, recuperāre, but arrived in English by different paths.
