passport

From French passeport, a combination of passer ("to pass") and port ("port"). In English it settled into pass + port.

The word arrived already built from its two working parts, and English kept that same two-piece shape rather than reshaping it.

It shares its second half with the English word port, and Wiktionary notes portpass as a word to compare it with.
