From Middle English martial, meaning warlike or military, borrowed from Middle French martial or directly from Latin mārtiālis, "of or pertaining to Mars," the Roman god of war, built from Mārtius plus the adjective-forming suffix -ālis.

In Middle English the word carried a wider range than today, covering not just military matters but also bravery, fierceness, ruthlessness, and even domineering behavior — meanings that have since narrowed toward the strictly military sense.

It shares its Latin root with Italian marziale, Portuguese marcial, and Spanish marcial, all descending from the same word for "of Mars."
