Market comes from Middle English market, from late Old English market and Anglo-Norman markiet (Old French marchié), all ultimately from Latin mercātus, "trade, market," itself from mercor, "to trade, deal in, buy," derived from merx, "wares, merchandise."

The word has stayed close to its roots throughout — from Latin mercātus down to English market, it has always named the activity or place of trading goods.

It's a doublet of mart, and shares its root with Dutch markt, German Markt, and Swedish marknad, among other European words for the same thing.
