endure

Endure comes from Middle English enduren, borrowed from Old French endurer, which traces to Latin indūrō, meaning "to make hard."

The word entered English via French with its Latin sense of hardening still attached, and in doing so it displaced the older Old English word drēogan, which lingers only in the dialect word dree.

Endure is a doublet of dure, meaning both descend from the same Latin root through separate paths into English.
