Drama comes from Late Latin drāma, borrowed from Ancient Greek δρᾶμα (drâma), meaning an act, a theatrical act, or a play, itself from the verb δράω (dráō), "to act, to take action, to achieve."

The word moved from Greek describing theatrical action into Latin as a term for a play, and then into English essentially unchanged in form and meaning.

Drama is a doublet of dorama, meaning they descend from the same root through different paths.
