Courage comes from Middle English corage, from Old French corage, from Vulgar Latin *corāticum, itself built on Latin cor, meaning "heart."

The word entered English through French and eventually pushed out the older native word for bravery, Old English ellen (also spelled elne), which faded from use.

It's a distant cousin of cardiac, which also traces back to a word for "heart," though cardiac comes down through Greek rather than Latin — the two words share the same ancient root even though they arrived in English by different roads.
