Borrowed from Gujarati baṅglo, meaning a Bengali-style house — a detached house set apart in a garden or field.

The word moved from describing a house style associated with Bengal into English simply as a term for a low, detached house, with the regional name fading into the background.

It's a doublet of bangalo and Bangla, and shares roots with Hindi baṅglā ("Bengali") and Bengali baṅla ("Bengal") — all pointing back to the same place name.
