Braille comes from French braille, named after Louis Braille (1809–1852), the French educator who devised the raised-dot writing system for the blind.

The word simply carried the inventor's name into English as the label for his system; the facts don't show a shift in meaning beyond that.

English says it as /breɪl/, which looks like a spelling pronunciation, since French actually says the name with /aj/, closer to 'brye' than 'brayl'.
