abscess

Borrowed from Latin abscessus, meaning both 'a going away' and 'a gathering of humors,' from abscēdō ('go away, depart'), itself from abs ('away from') plus cēdō ('go').

The Latin word already carried both senses at once — departure and swelling — the ancient idea being that bad humors withdrew from the rest of the body and collected in one place, forming the pocket we now call an abscess.

It shares its root cēdō ('go') with English cede, so the two words are cousins built from the same core idea of going or yielding.
