Where it came from
Occitan is a Romance language of the Occitano-Romance and Gallo-Romance groups. Its closest relative is Catalan, which was considered a dialect of Occitan until the end of the 19th century. Over time, names such as Limousin, Languedocien, Gascon and Provençal have each been used for the whole language, though Provençal now mostly means the dialect of Provence.
