Where it came from

Middle Persian descended from Old Persian, the language of the Achaemenid Empire. It became the literary language of the Sasanian Empire, and kept its prestige for some time after that empire collapsed. It is the linguistic ancestor of New Persian, the official language of Iran, Afghanistan (Dari) and Tajikistan (Tajik).
