Where it came from

Koine Greek grew out of the spread of Greek after Alexander the Great's conquests in the fourth century BC. It was based mainly on Attic and related Ionic speech forms, with admixtures from other varieties through dialect levelling. Its name, ἡ κοινὴ διάλεκτος, means 'the common dialect', and it was a lingua franca across the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
